Prevent (Counter-Terrorism and Safeguarding)

Terrorism can occur anywhere in the world and may be carried out in support of a range of ideologies. While there is no single agreed definition, terrorism is commonly understood to involve criminal acts intended to create fear and terror among the general public.

At Bow Community Primary School, Prevent is part of our safeguarding responsibilities and aligns with the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy. The aim of Prevent is to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism by identifying and supporting those who may be vulnerable to radicalisation. This is delivered through a safeguarding-led, multi-agency approach.

Since July 2015, all schools have had a statutory duty to safeguard children from radicalisation and extremism. At Bow Community Primary School, this duty is taken seriously and is embedded within our wider safeguarding practice. We work to protect pupils from extremist and violent views in the same way that we protect them from other forms of harm, such as drug misuse or gang-related activity. We also provide a safe and supportive environment where pupils can discuss these issues openly, helping them to develop understanding, resilience and the skills needed to keep themselves safe.
