Statement of intent for Design Technology

Intent

At Bow Community Primary School, we aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum, which prepares them for life beyond primary education. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject, which can be found in many of the objects children use each day and is a part of children’s immediate experiences. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and work creatively to solve problems, both as individuals and as members of a team. At Bow CPS, the Design and Technology curriculum combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real problems. It can improve analysis, problem solving, practical capability and evaluation skills. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other areas of learning such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. The children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers.

 

Implementation

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. All teaching of DT should follow the design, make and evaluate cycle. Each stage should be rooted in technical knowledge. The design process should be rooted in real life, relevant contexts to give meaning to learning. While making, children should be given choice and a range of tools to choose freely from. To evaluate, children should be able to evaluate their own products against a design criteria. Each of these steps should be rooted in technical knowledge and vocabulary. DT should be taught to a high standard, where each of the stages should be given equal weight. The key skills we teach the children may include:

  •          sewing and textiles
  •          cooking and nutrition
  •          electrical or mechanical components
  •          Using materials

 

Impact

What will this look like? By the time children leave our school they will have:

  •          An excellent attitude to learning and independent working.
  •           The ability to work constructively and productively with others.
  •          The ability to carry out research, show initiative and ask questions to develop a knowledge of users’ needs.
  •           The ability to act as responsible designers and makers, using materials carefully and working safely.
  •          Knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products.
  •          The ability to apply skills accurately.
  •          The ability to manage risks well to manufacture products safely and hygienically.
  •          A passion for the subject.
